Joe Royer, the founder and director of the Outdoors, Inc., Canoe and Kayak Race, usually participates in the race himself. But a freak accident on his bike a couple of weeks ago left him with an injured shoulder that required surgery to repair, so he watched Saturday's race from a seat on a motorized boat. Never one to spend time unproductively, Joe took a number of photographs, including the one above. The canoes, who started two minutes after the kayaks, are beginning to overtake some of their twin-bladed brethren.
