The last time I paddled on the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge was 22 years ago in a whitewater C-1. I was accompanied by this guy, Baton Rouge native Barry Kennon. Barry, a frighteningly-talented paddler, was a member of the U.S. whitewater slalom team at the time. A few years later he would win the C-1 class at the world championships of whitewater rodeo. If I remember correctly, we put our boats in the water in almost the exact spot where the Big River Regional race will be starting this Saturday, just upstream of the Interstate 10 bridge. I'll be in a much different-looking boat (a surf ski) this time.
